Decide on the amount that you may need after 15 or 20 years. Now at an average return of 12% count on the amount you should be investing. Then start a 1/3rd SIP in the best direct funds in each of small cap, midcap and large cap fund.

12% is a good average because if you consider very high return and if you may end up falling short, it won't be enough and so keeping the expectation of return as low is preferred.

I made the lumpsum investment in two children gift fund. Hdfc and axis (compulsory lock-in till 18yrs of child) in 2015. Return xirr on hdfc is 21% and axis is 12%. Just switch hdfc to direct and axis i cannot due to compulsory lockin.

Always avoid funds with lockin as and when one can.
