There is no general rule but depends on the patterns and each of those is not the same pattern

There are multiple reasons for markets being this volatile.
    1) Having run up crazy on the upside.
    2) Most of the expected news are out.
    3) Many with left out feelings entering markets on minor dips.
    4) Expiry nearing after such stupendous moves in most of the stocks.
    5) All sorts of emotions of greed and fear
Needless to say, everything is part and parcel of the game.
We all have made too much of easy money in markets in a very short time. Considering these things, volatility is inevitable. What I would do is investing in good stocks that hasn't gone up madly. Even if I do, I would be willing to suffer the strict SL which could be very near to my buy price. In other cases, i would go with closing SL, avoiding small caps, low volume play shares and other known highly volatile shares(eg: Tata Steel) completely. If things aren't working out in favour for no reasons still, taking a small break to get a nice view is always good.

I'm not sure if all these makes some sense, but this is my view.

    Thanks
    Naveen
