Banks because some of them are available at attractive prices, somewhat like getting a branded pair of Blackberry trousers for Rs. 499 on a super duper sale carnival.
Dollar is riding high, hence RBI taking steps which more or less are not favorably acting for banks. But 'masih' is looking at a medium term investment opportunity, not a very short term. This thread has been posted in "Fundamental Analysis" and I suppose masih isn't looking for a trading opportunity here, rather he's looking at a medium term outlook.
That's why banks (better ones) are being mentioned.

I believe this can be somewhat a time to start nibbling at banks, though it can't be predicted with 100% accuracy that all have completely bottomed out. Its just a bad patch, but the cycle will change, sooner or later. Meanwhile, I feel that masih can slowly start gathering some of the better ones, just as it is being discussed in this thread.

Shabbir, I am much of a passive investor, how if I go on investing in these stocks every month say for 5-7 years and then after 7 years check and decide to sell off if needed? is there any risk in loosing capital on these stocks?

    Larsen & Toubro
    M & M
    Reliance Inds.
    Dr Reddy's Labs
    Kotak Mah. Bank
    Dabur India
    Maruti Suzuki
    ONGC
    IDFC
    Idea

    Let me know your views.

I don't recommend you should buy and check after 7 years. You should be visiting them at least twice a year but possibly 4 to 5 times a year.

Also your list of stock is nothing but may be best stock in each sector and I don't think you have done any homework on why you should be selecting that one and again not something that I recommend

An example could be Reliance Inds. It has not done anything for last 5 years and so not sure why you should be investing in it and then forgetting for next 5 to 7 years.

Will suggest you to become an active investor and not passive investor.

True, being active investor helps but that need time and that too on regular basis.

I guess here mutual fund helps, in your experience of trading how much percentage you earn on capital after booking profits/loss - like say 15%/20% on a average every quarter ?

Just curious as want to compare with returns of MF!

No I don't think it needs lot of time. Lets say an hour or two every month to asses your investments and look for switch or even 3 to 4 hours in a quarter to see how companies have been doing and how markets are performing and if you need to be doing any switches or not.

This is not too much time and if this is something you cannot give to your investments. Keeping money in bank account is what you should be doing.

Good suggestion, I don't know how can u put ur money somewhere and will see after 7 years.
If time is reason than go for FD or saving A/c only.
Shabbir has given u one example onle but if u check by your self u will come to know hundreds of stock like Reliance, Reliance Capital, Bhel, Bank of India, Ntpc, R com, Unitech, Dlf, etc., And most of all are blue chip and leader of their sector.
Dear it is your hard earned money, so please take decisions by mind not on rumors or by heart.

Better to check performance before investment or hire any genuine fund manager, not like Tip provider or media analyst, just go for any fund manager who has good record and whom u can contact and reach also u can check by other clients.

Look I am active trader and investor too from last 9 years and seen ups and downs here, lost here and then recovered and earning and I can one thing time is thing which u can utilize well only by experience, so time spending is vary from person to person according to their age, experience, etc.,.
Tell u exactly when actually start learning something u will start sparing time for it (could be stock market, music,etc.,).
I am spending 15-20 minutes a day only to choose any new long term or short term or positional and even for intraday too and I bet u and others can also able to do that if find interesting and become passionate.
